
🔋 1. “Off” isn’t fully off
Most modern laptops don’t completely shut down when you press the power button. Features like:
- Modern Standby / Fast Startup (Windows)
- Connected Standby / Sleep states
- Wake-on-LAN / USB charging while off
…keep some circuits powered for instant-on or background updates. These draw small but steady current.
Fix:
- Fully shut down (Shift + Shutdown in Windows).
- Or disable Fast Startup in Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do.
⚡ 2. BIOS or motherboard always draws a little power
Even when totally off, the RTC (real-time clock) and BIOS memory require power. It’s tiny (a few mAh per day), but over weeks it can add up.
Fix: None really—this is normal. But if it drains within days, see below.
🧩 3. USB charging or peripherals
Some laptops can charge phones or accessories via USB even when off.
That means current is constantly flowing.
Fix:
- Disable “USB charging when off” or “Always On USB” in BIOS/UEFI.
- Disconnect all USB devices when shutting down.
🌡️ 4. Faulty battery or board leakage
If it loses charge rapidly (e.g. 20–30% overnight while off), that’s likely battery cell leakage or board leakage — meaning power is bleeding through the motherboard even when off.
Fix:
- Test with the battery removed (if possible) and AC only.
- If the issue disappears, replace the battery.
- If not, the motherboard’s power circuit may need repair.
🔌 5. External devices or residual drain
- Dongles, external drives, or wireless receivers can draw power even when the system is off.
- Some models keep internal devices (e.g., Bluetooth, network cards) semi-active for wake-on-LAN.
Fix: Unplug all accessories and disable wake features in BIOS.
